MallorcaNews is not the place to read about the Covid-19, as we are not experts to judge this complex virus. Instead, we have picked some headlines of local newspapers, trying to give an insight on the situation before Easter:

“The CoronaVirus is ending in the Balearic Islands.”

The Balearic Islands are one of the eight autonomous communities nearing the end of the CoronaVirus epidemic, according to the latest data from the National Epidemiology Network.

“Balearics are one of the regions in Spain, which is closest to control of the CoronaVirus.”

“CoronaVirus optimism in the Balearics”

We will plan to move forward so that in a few weeks we can say that it is all over.

Because of the limited possibility at the moment to move around the island, we offer various home delivery services and give you more information about the island's history and its inhabitants.

“El libro de las plantas olvidadas” is one of the most beautiful botanical books about plants in the Balearic Islands. The Mallorcan lady Aina S. Erice studied biology at the Balearic University, graduated as master in physiology about Mediterranean plants and published 3 books. Aina focuses mainly on herbs and writes stories about each plant from all cultural and knowledge areas. The book is printed 2 coloured: text black on white, the drawings in tender green. Aina presents each of the 100 plants according the same schema: “where do you find them”, “how were they used”. The texts are from Aina, drawings from Montse Moreta, published by Ariel. Historic Mallorca

The beautiful rooms of the Bishop’s Residence make one of the oldest museums on the island. Looking from the sea to the right of the cathedral, situated in a palace from the 13th century. The exhibits are distributed in 4 halls, dedicated to Jesus Christ, Maria, the church as a community of believers and their holy persons. The art comes partly from cloisters around the island, which don’t exist any more and were rescued in the last moment before getting damaged. There is a 14th century wooden urn from the vanished cloister Sant Domingo. Some of the exhibited pieces are already known, like the picture of the Holy George from 1470. Or the famous stuffed “Drac de na Coca”, a small crocodile, probably arrived in Palma 1776 on a trade ship and lived in the canalisation underneath the old town, frightening the inhabitants. The governor of Alcudia killed it with a dagger and presented the animal to his lady Coca - the children could sleep without fear again. The oldest archeological treasures are an incense bowl and the ornamented part of the head of a stone basilica column, both from 6th century. The time before the Muslims reined Mallorca. Two long silver poles topped like a crown, so called Rimonim from the 15 century are the oldest ever found in the world. They used to hold the Jewish Tora roll and were later performed to scepter. “Museu d’Art Sacre de Mallorca (MASM)”, Carrer del Mirador 5, Bishop’s Palace, Palma, Tel.: 971 713133, Museuartsacredemallorca.org

Secrets in the depth: in the cave Ses Aiguades close to Alcudia, filled with sweet water lay rests of hundreds of amphora. Through a 1m big hole the amphora came into the 180 m long cave, today filled with water, up to 14m high. The explorers estimate the age of the amphora at 2000 years and they came mostly from Hispania Tarraconensis, a Roman province, including big parts of the todays Iberian peninsular and from Laietani, a tribe of the todays Barcelona. Researchers try to find out which goods were stored, olive oil, wine or garum, an antique fish sauce. They believe that the mariners sacrificed the amphora with goods before they went on a journey. The harbor of Pollentia, todays Alcudia, is nearby and they probably asked for aid and help.

Old stones, new knowledges, an archeological tour between Sencelles and Costitx gives fascinating views in the live of the inhabitants in Mallorca 3000 years ago. Between the graveyard Camp del Bisbe and the sanctuary Son Corro are just 2,5 km but approx. 1000 years difference. No other place in Mallorca offers so much history on a small surface like the “Ruta arqueologico Sencelles-Costitx”. The 6 excavations are well signed and explained with info boards, explaining as well in English. In the cave Cova del Camp de Bisbe, explorers did amazing discoveries. This nature cave was 3000 years ago a prehistoric graveyard. They found skeletons of at least 50 different persons. The bodies were laid out, not buried. The researchers found a big number triangle shaped buttons as gifts for the deaths and approx. 40 buttons of ivory. They came from African elephants probably produced in Egypt.

The second stop on the route is the Talaiot de Son Fred, an imposing rotunda of 12m diameter, possibly a public building. They found unique clay cups, which were only found here.

3rd part of the route is the sanctuary Son Corro, approx. 500 years younger. They call it sanctuary because the stone cylinders on top of each other were situated isolated, not in close distance to living areas. 1895 the famous bronze bullheads were found in Son Corro from the post talaiotic time, 550 until 123 BC. The Spanish government bought the heads and exhibits them in the Archaeology Museum in Madrid.

4th step is the talaiot settlement Es Turrasot near the conservatorium in Costitx.

Nr 5 and 6 can only be visited after allowance of the town hall of Sencelles.

Mallorca’s first inhabitants came in the bronze time 4000 to 4500 years ago from the Spanish Main land. According to DNA analysis the researchers found out that shepherds came from the east of Europe, from Sicily and Sardinia and made 40% of the original inhabitants of Spain.
