Restaurant tips

Restaurant “Diecisiete Grados” in Palmas pedestrian street Calle Fabrica, 12 was opened 15 years ago by 2 young fellows, presenting a cool tavern with a long bar where young people had a glass of wine with some tapas in a good atmosphere. By the years, the owners and guests became older and the tavern changed bit by bit to a modern, up-marked restaurant, focusing mainly on excellent meat like entrecote, rips, T-bone-steak, lamb chops, hamburger, grilled over stone oak wood. Spanish dishes like “huevos rotos” (destroyed eggs) on artichokes with ham, foie with pear chutney or delicious croquettes filled with shrimps and butifarron (blood sausage). Good priced lunch menu with choice possibility. Tel.: 871 943368, www.diecisietegrados.es.

Two brothers from Hungary opened a restaurant close to the Mercat de l’Olivar. Besides specialities from Hungary they offer mainly Mediterranean food. Fine dishes like the duck Carpaccio with orange-roasted duck gravy, steak tartar or short fried tuna fish in sesame crust on beet root rice with coriander-lemon-sauce or small pieces of chicken, dressed with popcorn  - a funny but tasty idea - with broccoli salad. The dessert “Gundel Crepe” got its name after the inventor, the Hungarian chef Karoly Gundel (1883-1956) is a tempting thin pancake, filled with nut-rum-raisin-mixture and covered with chocolate-rum-sauce. Yummy!! C/d’Enric Alzamora, 3, Palma, Tel.: 661 881277, FB: Hungry Gastro Food Bar

Restaurant “Mister Chicharron” close to S’Escorxador, run by an Italian chef together with his wife from Dominican Republic, offer traditional, good prices food from many Latin American countries. You find dishes from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Columbia and Mexico, later they add Bolivia and Peru. “Chicharrones” is pork, boiled in well-spiced gravy, enriched with orange juice and then deep fried in small pieces, offered in small or big version, accompanied with patacones (deep fried plantain), rice, frijoles (red beans) or French fries, available as well with chicken. “Bandera dominicana” is served with rice and red beans together with chicken and egg plant. “Mangu” is mash from boiled green plantains with cheese or salami, fried yuca (manioc). Or Mexican “tacos” with chili con carne, Columbian “arepas” (sweet corn round flat dough cake), Dominican street food “pica pollo” or the “tamales” - meat and/or cheese filled sweet corn dumplings, rapped in sweet corn leaves and steamed. The bigger version “nacatamales” is rapped in banana leaves and comes from Nicaragua. Here the filling is pork or chicken, tomatoes, rice, garlic, onions, potatoes, raisins. This dish and fresh fish will only be served after reservation. Enjoy beer from South America, Tequila or juices, like the agave juice, served with water or milk. For breakfast they offer the versions Latino (scrambled egg with arepa and rice), Americano (scrambled eggs and bacon), Español (toast with tomato), Aleman (scrambled egg with sausage). C/Francesc Suau, 14b, Palma, Tel.: 871-573491, FB: Mister Chicharron

The restaurant “Puro Fuego” in Santa Ponsa is a quality event. Do you know the World Steak Challenge, taken place every year in London or Dublin? There meet the world best meat companies, tested by world professional juries. The gold medal was given last year and the year before to the brand “Roxa d’Ouro” of the Galician company Gutrei. The meat from 8 to 9 year old animals of the race Gallega ages approx 90 days. Not cheap, but unique in the taste and you get it in “Puro Fuego”. The chef offers the awarded meat, awarded anchovies, awarded olive oil, caviar and carefully selected wines. Delicious bread, pink tomatoes with olive oil and anchovies, deep fried pieces of octopus with Sobrassada and honey, grilled red pepper with tuna fish, just to mention some of the delicious “normal” dishes. Many dishes have Mallorquan origin, some come from Asturias, Leon and Madrid. C/Puig des Teix 6, Tel.: 674 676222, FB: Asador Puro Fuego
