Mallorca Specials

Mallorca has already 3 UNESCO world heritages: the cultural landscape Tramuntana, the song of the Sibylles and the so-called dry stone walls. Now the government applies for a 4th heritage which should be the glass blowing Gordiola in Algaida. There, since 1719 they manufacture mouth blown art works. In competition for the title is the Spanish factory La Granja in Segovia and factories in Finland, Germany, Czechia, France and Turkey. Gordiola gained in its 300 years history a very good reputation. Famous clients are the Spanish Royalties and Michelle Obama. They only work by order, coming from Spain and other European countries, the United States, Singapore or Morocco.

Good notes for the university of the Baleares. For 14.000 bachelor and master students and approx. 1000 lecturers and professors started beginning September the new academic year 2019/20 in the universities of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza/Formentera. The offer are 76 bachelor and master course of studies. In August 2019 the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2019 was published, better known as Shanghai Ranking and the UIB (Universities Islas Baleares) managed for the first time to be one of the 500 best universities worldwide. Within Spain they became no. 11 out of 38 places. Especially in the subject oceanography, tourism, agro- and geo science and physic they were worldwide outstanding. This good result came, between others, from a team of scientists discovering the gravitation waves who won the physic novel price. One of the professors being part of this success was the Austrian Sascha Husa, who teaches since 2008 on the physic faculty of UIB. Since 2016/17 the UIB offers the course of studies in medicine; since 2018/17 the possibility to study health/physiotherapy. A bachelor study (grado) takes 4 years, the master (postgrados) one year. www.uib.eu

From 22 to 27 October will be the 21st European championship in balloon driving over Manacor. 90 balloons from 23 nations drive and 10 balloons come for watchers. The goal are 10 m big targets on the ground. Similar like the darts game, the pilots must hit the middle. Instead of arrows, they throw small sand sacks. Depending on the weather they plan 17 passings. It is a bit like ice hockey in the air, because above the goals the balloons are very close to each other. Each pilot tries to push away the other balloon and gain the best position. The competition balloons are a bit smaller than normal balloons but fast like a rocket; they can fall down up to 11 m per second. During the event, the airspace is closed for airplanes; they have to fly a bow around the balloons or fly at least 4000 feet (approx. 1400 m) high. Several international TV stations applied to report live. To be up to date all the time there will be a live ticker on mallorcaballoons.com, informing about the results and where the balloons are and where they are flying. You can book as well a tour on this website to watch the event from a balloon for 240 Euro per person. www.fai-europeans2019.org

Mallorquan Mario Mola was for 3 years the Triathlon worldchampion but after several injuries he became no. 2 at the last competition in Lausanne. Now he is focusing for the Olympic games.

Recomended Restaurants

Enjoying good food at the “5 Illes Beach & Sunset” on the beach of Colonia de Sant Jordi, situated beautifully in a nature resort. To get to the restaurant, directly behind the beach between pine trees, you have to walk 3, 4 minutes along the beach S’Estany, no road leads to the restaurant. You eat peacefully with sea view, beginning with a starter like Salmorejo (tomatoes, bread, oil, garlic), which is topped with shrimps and Guacamole, or mussels in a delicate, slightly hot curry sauce or a hummus, enriched very refreshing with mango and citrus fruits. The popular, but normally quite boring dish gambas al ajillo, is pepped up with Sobrassada, lemon and ginger. The main dishes vary from grilled tuna fish, marinated in soya sauce and honey with wakame sea weed over to a grilled squid with wok vegetables, or presa (shoulder part) of an Iberian pork, marinated in home made Chimichurri sauce or duck breast with sweet potatoes mash and curry sauce. The restaurant has 120 seats indoor and 80 in the lounge and snack area where you can enjoy a cocktail like the house cocktail “5IllesBeach&Sunset” with rum, almond syrup, triple sec and passion fruit. There is a small stage where different artists perform on some evenings during the week, changing from soul, funk, folk and flamenco. Netflix made a little movie on this spot, broadcasting it in the Netflix series “White Lies” in the coming year. Playa s’Estany, Tel.: 971 180556, www.5illesmallorca.com

The restaurant “Son Caliu” is for meat lovers and parents with children. The stars of this grill restaurant, next to the Hotel Son Caliu are a Josper grill oven and a normal grill station. They serve different pieces of beef like shoulder, tail, filet, chops, thymus and chicken or fish. They have the special ensaladilla rusa with truffles aroma, the special chistorra sausage from Navarra, poyoyo goat cheese from Andalucía, anchovies from Cantabria - specialties from all over Spain. They offer typical Spanish Mallorquan food and special dishes for children. Fresh and best quality is guaranteed; the meat comes directly from a meat company in Castilian-Leon. You sit inside or roofed outside with the open grill station. The children can play in 2 inflatable bouncing castles, a mini football court and a play corner for the little ones. Avda. It was the 4th readers competition “World Luxury Restaurant Awards” and you could choose among 270 restaurants in 90 countries. Avda. D’America, 2, Palma, Tel.: 971 596018. katagiblau.com

Olive oil production

The biggest olive oil production on the island is in Son Mesquidassa between Felanitx and Porreres at the village Son Mesquida. Son Mesquidassa is a project of Cristobal Rossello, the chef of the family company Rossello, known through their products like pickled olives, capers and sea fennel. Their olives come mainly from Andalucía, the most important olive region in Spain. 150.000 olive trees grow there nearly endless over the flat land and hills. The oil is sold under the name Rosello and Baile. The own olive plants on Mallorca would be far too small for the needed amount by the hotels per year - approx. 6 million liters. High valued and D.O. Certificated olive oils - approx. 70.000 to 80.000 liters per year - shall satisfy the gourmet clients with 3 pure Arbequina oils and 2 Arbequina-Picual-mixtures.

Visitors can view the whole circle of production. All stations are numbered, beginning with the harvest and delivery of the olives over separating the leaves, separating the pulp and kernels, squeezing, centrifugation, filtering, laboratory and bottling. A pamphlet in different languages informs you what happens on each of the 28 stations. The sight seeing starts with a well made video film and ends in a big room where you can buy all products from this company (Conservas Rossello) and test the olive oil. A visit with finca round trip, film and round walk through the mill and tasting costs 8 Euro. If, in addition, you want to use the mini train and eat a pa amb oli they charge 16 Euro. As a tip for special visitors - there is even a helicopter-landing platform. Tel.: 635 570445, www.sonmesquidassa.com
