The Night of Sant Joan

On Sunday 23rd is the „Nit de Sant Joan“, it’s one of the most popular festivities in Baleares, celebrating the arrival of summer with shortest night of the year. Also it is the memorial day of John Baptist who announced the arrival of Jesus.

The biggest fiesta is taking place in Palma, the “Nit del Foc”, the night of fire, after dark the running of demons and devils, juggling around with fire, smoke and fireworks, accompanied by percussions and drums expel bad ghosts and demons of the town.

Starting from 18:45, at Parc del Mar, various attractions and activities like drumming, folklore dancing, show cooking, and kids activities and many more. At 20:15 there is a children’s fire run, and at 22:30 the real devils appear out of the city walls. After the fire subsides (normally around 23:00) the participants head to the beaches and coves around to bathe in the sea and make a wish to welcome the summer solstice.

In many villages on the island there are celebrations with music, concerts and dancing, barbecues at the beaches with families and friends, sitting around bonfires illuminated by candles. Due to a long tradition all go for a swim at midnight, to reset the previous year and make their wishes for the coming year ahead.

Make sure you get to the beach on time to set up your space because it tends to get crowded, especially the popular beaches.
