Mallorca Specials

Handmade candelabras and furniture are designed in a studio in Carrer Sant Feliu, Palma by two gentlemen from Argentina. They were invited to the London Design Fair end September 2018 and their table “Connector” was a best seller. The table comes folded in single pieces in a flat carton, to be put up yourself.

Their candelabras are made from glass, brass, nickel, chrome and Terrazzo, each one a numbered unique piece,  produced at the Mallorcan glass manufacturers Gordiola and Menestralia.

Their furniture collection “Connector” are tables and shelves in different sizes. The tops of the tables are stones, manufactured by the Mallorcan tile producer Huguet in Campos. Mauricio Obarrio, one of the designers studied industrial design in Buenos Aires. His career started already during his studies: for the businessman, designer and restaurant owner Juan Santa Cruz from Chile he designed the lighting for the Isabel Bar in Buenos Aires and received a design price. Later he got orders for the Veuve Clicquot Lounge in Algodon Mansion Hotel and the Art Deco Hotel Miami. A typical “Contain” lamp is recognised from the puristic shape influenced by the art-deco-style. Some “Contain” lamps are already installed in private houses and mansions on the island. www.contain.es

The PlazaRaimundoClar in the East of Palmas old town and its closed surrounding is getting more and more interesting regarding good restaurants. The right spot for the sympathic “Tasquita d’Esquina”, a cosy and inviting place, offering food and wines, mainly  from the North of Portugal. Un-plastered brick-concrete walls, high room, big windows and many worth seeing fotos from the owner Sandra Viva. Sandra studied photography and worked as a waitress, last in  5star hotels, like the St. Regis Mardavall. She points out that it is not a restaurant, more a tapas bar, a casual meeting point, combining food, music and art. She plans live music in future and more exhibitions. You get “pan do caco” with butter and garlic, delicious “pataniscas” (in the card as “bunyols de bacala”), kind of deep fried grated potatoes on salted cod, onion, persil, some flour and water. “Chorizo Portuguese”, the meat is enriched with wine and roasted over snaps or “pica pau”, a combination of bread, potato chips and beef pieces in a sauce of mustard, wine and mixed pickles. Highlight is “francesinha”, a different kind of sandwich from Porto: 2 slices of toast, in between ham, a fried sausage, chorizo, a piece of beef and Serrano ham, topped with a coat of cheece slices, gratined, with some drops of sauce and served with potato chips. If you only like to have a glass of wine from Portugal or a glass of Portwine, always welcome, from breakfast to nightcup. Es Mercat des Peix” is an unexpected 360 m2 big and beautiful restaurant with 150 seats, a huge complete open kitchen in the middle and the heart of the restaurant: big amount of different fresh fish and sea food on ice, like in a market hall. You choose the fish and decide the way you like to have it prepared: fried, steamed, in the oven, deep-fried, with wine-butter-olive-sauce or in a salt coat. Decent price for the ready prepared fish, served with salad and a buffet with potatoes, potato wedges, 2 different rice variations, mixed vegetables. Some dishes you can buy ready. For non fish lovers they offer Angus filet. C/ Alfonso el Magnanimo, 29, Palma, Tel 871 85 29 40, www.esmercatdespeix.es

Close to the Mercat de l’Olivar in Palma is the restaurant “RamenOtaku”. Ramen is a special noodle soup, originally from China. The Japanese copied it and in the meantime it is a national Japenese dish with approx. 500 different basic recipes. Only in Tokio there are 8000 ramen soup restaurants and since 2016 two restaurants have a Michelin star. The soup starts with boiled pork and chicken meat, various - up to 15 different herbs, herb sauce, called “tare”. In their winter soup “Tonkotsu” comes as well a black garlic oil and of course the noodles, sometimes 4 different ones. Leek, soja sprouts, nori sea weed, sweet corn, beans, ginger and half an egg. The egg - an XXL bio egg - has been soft boiled before, peeled and marinated for 6 hours in a mirin-soja sauce mixture. As starter they offer steamed beans with lemon-chili-salt, home made Gyozas, either with shrimps, pork or tofu filling, a salmon-egg plant-tartar with Wasabi-caviar. As a desert they recommend cheese cake with tamarind marmalade and coco. All served with beer from Japan or Sake. The chef Bjoern Heibult worked in London, New Zealand, Barcelona, as a chef on private yachts and cruisers around the world. Among his clients are many famous, like George Clooney and Bjoern Borg. He got his name from him - his mother loved Bjoern Borg. C/ Volta de la Merce 2, Tel. 658 95 71 94, FB Ramen Otaku.
