Around Mallorca

Palma’s annual festivities "San Sebastian" will highlight on the night of the 19th January. On eight stages, at different plazas of Palma, 30 bands will perform. All concerts are free. Pop rock, flamenco and rumba, swing and rockabilly, pop and greatest hits, jazz, ball de bot (typical Mallorca dance), folk and traditional music, electronic and urban music form part of the musical.

The end of the festivities of Sant Sebastià is marked by fire and demons. As every year, on the 21st the Correfoc will turn the center of Palma into the gates of hell where life will be given to infernal creatures, who will distribute fire and lights from the Avenida de Jaume III to Plaza del Rey Joan Carles I, where they will meet the mythical beasts of fire, all together to end a night of fear with batucadas (group drummings) and dances.

The gallery Fran Reus, Palma, shows 2 exhibitions. In the ground floor, are the works of the Catalan artist Pau Sampera with the figure of Cucciolo (in English Dopey) in different situations, from the original Disney Snow white movie from 1937. Besides small acrylic pictures, Cucciolo find himself in a hanging arrangement of foam and chains, a rough oversized graffiti on the floor of the gallery and on acrylic glass plates. The exhibition in the cellar shows works of the Madrid artist Javier Rodriguez Lozano with the title “Lope de Rueda, 31” relating to the building with several renters in which the artist lives. Rodriguez presents in 17 small and big format oil paintings the foot mats of his neighbours. The works are named after the real numbers of their apartments. The result is a study about the meaning and aesthetic of daily used products, partly ignored, partly giving an impression of the inhabitants behind the doors. Exhibition until 7 March at Paseo Mallorca, 4.

Stefan Lundgren in Santa Catalina, Palma exhibited the works of the US American Jacolby Satterwhite in 2013. At that time, the artist stood at the beginning of his career. Meanwhile, 5 years later, he is a famous artist with works in the collection of MOMA in New York. Right now, Satterwhite shows his actual, monumental video art work “Blessed Avenue”, a bizarre phantasy world of pornography, video games, architecture and the drawings of his mother Patricia. Satterwhite films friends in front of the green screen and builds in the pictures in his cosmos. He worked on this project for months. According to him, he only slept 3 hours per night. Dip in this fascinating world. As well they present the videos “Blessed Avenue B” and “Cold Pit”. C./ Bisb Moncades 2.

Mallorca Specials

Many chefs had been working with Marc Fosh, starting in the Hotel Reads, later in “Simply Fosh”, today “Marc Fosh”, “Misa Braseria”, “Tasca Blanquerna”, “Fosh Lab” and “Fosh Kitchen”. Many of these chefs followed him until they got their own stars like Andreu Genestra or Adrian Quetglas. Others cook today in “Boathouse” (Miki Tsigaras) or in “Sa Fabrica” in Inca (Marcel Ress). Last year 2 ex Foshians opened their own restaurant. Toni Martorell cooks now in his “Vida Meva”. For many years he was the chef in “Misa Brasseria” and later chef in the restaurant “Marc Fosh”. In his own restaurant he focuses on the day, breakfast with self made bread and croissants. He closes in the evening and on weekends. The reason is that the new generation of chefs want to spend more time with their families than career. Prices are fair and decent. You can have a 3 course menu for 14 Euro or the famous Misa fried chicken for 2 persons with garnish for 25 Euro.

Raul Garcia who cooked as well in the “Misa Brasseria” and was chef in the “Fosh Lab” opened his “Kataris” close to Algaida with fair prices. You can have a 3 course menu for 12 Euro or a 5 course menu for 20 Euro. Among others they offer delicious food like suckling pig with fennel and apple ginger compote or perch with hummus, coriander and pomegranate seed. Both restaurants are highly recommended.

The Fort La Fortalesa is situated majestically on the half island of Port de Pollensa and it is impossible - without enough money - to enter this impressive property. The Mallorcan Basket ball star Rudy Fernandez got married there. The British BBC produced the series “The night manager” which later won 3 Goden Globes. In 1560, when Vice King Guillem de Rocafull visited the towns Soller and Pollenca, he realised that both towns had no defence against the attacks from sea. 1623 the first defence tower was erected, in 1682 King Carlos II gave the order to build a real fort. The ground plan was a hexagon, the only fort on the island with this shape and probably the only one in Spain. In 1867 the military put the fort on an auction, a Mallorquan inhabitant from Pollenca bought it and sold it 1919 to the Argentinian painter Roberto Ramauge, who, at that time, already paid an astronomic amount. The painter invested a big a sum, restored the building and built an enormous garden and pool. He celebrated with other artists sweeping banquets and orgies. 2011 the inheritors of Ramauge sold the property 2011 to a British Fond Manager. At that time they asked for 120 Mill. Euros, but in the end they paid 40 or 50 Mill. Euros. With the now owners are discussions about to open the fort once a month for a little group. We keep you informed.
