                                                                                                                                                                                                                                No. 3

Christmas Eve is closing in and so is the end of Art Line´s second - of a total of six - project period. During January to December a lot have happened. There has been a concert; there has been a seminar and a lecture; there has been an art-film screening and a workshop, and much more; and before 2011 turns one year older, here is a recap:

IKOF - Ingvar Kamprad Order Friendship

Driving to and fro IKEA

Art Line partner Kalmar konstmuseum launched their second public-space experiment within project Beta Test. The Kaliningrad-based art-goup San Donato was contacted, and they did, in  turn, via proxy, contact Ingvar Kamprad, asking if maybe they could lend his 1993 Volvo 240 for an art-experiment. They were politely told, via proxy, that - no, sorry - they could not. The car in the photograph above is thus not Kamprads, but an exact replica. The experiment started at the 17th of September at Kalmar konstmuseum, and carried on until the 20th of November. Read more about IKOF at the Art Line event-page.

The Baltic did Sound Good

Curated by Art Line partner Art Centre Gallery EL and sound-artist Krzysztof Topolski a three-day workshop, Baltic Sounds Good, ending with an improvisational concert, was held 27 - 30 September. Participating sound-artists, six in all, travelled the Baltic, using hydro- and microphones to gather sounds from and under the Baltic. The concert, which was live-streamed from the Art Line website, was held at spacious Art Centre Gallery EL in Elblag, Poland. The concert is available at Soundcloud if you want to listen to the Baltic sounding as you never guessed it would. A CD and a DVD of the workshop and concert will be made. Information on when it will be available will be put on the Art Line website and the Art Line Facebook-page.

Seminar and artfilms in Karlshamn and Karlskrona respectively

The 13th of October kicked off with a seminar, Media/Art/Culture/Innovation, in Karlshamn, Sweden. The department of Culture and Communication (DKK) at Blekinge Institute of Technology had within the Digital Art Platform Initiative invited lecturers and artists from the South Baltic region to discuss matters of digital media art. Artist Geska Helena Brecevic from the artist-duo Performing Pictures, Dmitry Bulatov from Kaliningrad NCCA, Oscar Guermouche and Mateusz Herczka amongst others were present. To see all the talks, head on over to the Art Line website.

Later, during the evening from 18:00 to 21:00, the city square of Karlskrona lit up. Curated by Oscar Guermouche Space Matters laid claim to the public space of central Karlskrona. A number of Swedish and Russian artfilms were screened. At the facade of the Concert Hall of Karlskrona, just above the entrance, Swedish artist Nicola Bergström-Hansen and Valdemar Lindekrantz´s film entitled Excavation II was screened, followed by Thomas Broomé´s HellHunt 666 sekunder. Below the lit up facade of the Concert Hall stood Geska Helena Brecevic, showing visitors how to download and use Performing Picture´s smartphone-application Offspring Taking Off. In the city-library, across the square from the Concert Hall, art-books were showcased, and on a screen just inside the entrance looped a total of three Russian art-films.

Art & Apparatus

Art & Apparatus is a three-fold series of workshops ending with an exhibition on 16 June at Kulturcentrum Ronneby. During the three workshops invited artists from the South Baltic area will get to experiment with watercutting- and 3D modelling technology. Hosting the technology to be experimented with are Swedish Waterjet Lab in Ronneby and MAD (Machine Art Design) Studio, part of Netport, in Karlshamn. In charge of the entire project is Kulturcentrum Ronneby.

During an entire week, from 17 - 21 October, invited artists - a total of 11 artists from Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Germany and Sweden - gathered in Ronneby and Karlshamn for the Art & Apparatus workshop number II. During this week they got to create artifacts using the watercutting and 3D-modelling technology. Photographs from the workshop can be found at Art Lines Flickr page. The last workshop before the exhibition in June 2012 will be held in January 2012. During this workshop four of the eleven artists will get invited to further experiment with offered technology in creating artifacts to be showcased at the exhibition.

Bonfires and the Baltic

Arranged by DKK within the Digital Art Platform Initiative, in cooperation with Art Line, a lecture entiteld Bonfire of the Vanity Presses were held at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Campus Gräsvik, during which Phd and poet David Prater discussed matters of writing practices, and read parts of his poetry. The lecture was held at the 16th of November and will soon be available to watch at the Art Line website.

Mid-December saw the launch of project Telling the Baltic´s own blog. At this blog participating partners will document the story-collecting process and post fragments of stories they have collected, either audially, visually, in writing or a combination of these three or two modes. The url to the blog is http://ttb.artline-southbaltic.eu. During the beginning of 2012 will see the continuation of the collection of stories; stories that will later on get put in the hands of selected artists from the South Baltic area. These artists will turn the stories into artworks to be showcased at a Telling the Baltic exhibition touring the South Baltic area. The set dates for exhibition venues can be found at the Telling the Baltic blog.
